Artist statement

I am a material based artist working primarily in glass. When appropriate I use other materials as a juxtaposition to the fluidity and transparency of glass. Having been raised and educated in Slovakia, I fell in love with the Norwegian landscape of contrasts, craggy shores, pooling water, and undulating and jutting mountains. I employ these forms, colors, and textures in my work to evoke both the inviting and stark landscapes of Norway as well as the moving, and intricately beautiful forms of water. I depict movement using color that runs through the permeable glass canvases I create, allowing it to pool and soak into the form. In 2019 as an EAiR at Pilchuck Glass School, USA, I began to integrate 3D modeling, CNC, and laser cutting into my practice by abstracting cartographic lines and creating 3 dimensional volumes that capture the essence of the place without being a direct representation. It became an inseparable part of my art practice to use virtual reality modeling, digital tracing, 3D printing, laser cutting, CNC milling, and experimental techniques with axidraw. I am exploring ways to move between tangible objects created by machines, and human made handcrafted pieces. The combination of which increases precision without sacrificing the human touch and gives me the ability to scale up using machine manufacturing.

Patrícia Šichmanová (b. 1992, Bratislava) is a glass and mixed-media artist based in Bergen, Norway. She graduated from the Academy of Fine Arts and Design in Bratislava in 2017, with study exchanges in Finland and Norway, and has since built an international practice through residencies at Pilchuck Glass School (2019) and panel talks at Glass Art Society Conference, USA (2022). Her work has been exhibited widely across Europe and the US, with solo shows at Kunstgarasjen Bergen (2025), Hordaland Kunstsenter, and multiple galleries in Bratislava, and is held in the collection of the National Museum in Lviv. She has received sustained support from Norwegian funding bodies, including Norsk Kulturråd and Norske Kunsthåndverkere, and was awarded 3rd Prize at the prestigious Stanislav Libensky Award in Prague. She is a member of Norske Kunsthåndverkere, the Glass Art Society, and the Slovak Union of Visual Arts.
