My name is Joey Bravo (he/him), I am a ceramic artist and writer based at Blokk in Bergen after graduating with an MFA from the Bergen Art Academy in 2025. I use sculpture and textiles to consider connections between ecological and queer politics. Water is a foundational element of my work because of my personal history as an ex-competitive swimmer and professional lifeguard, and also because it is essential to the world around me, the stream that (literally) runs through everything. It is the thing we’re running out of that we can’t live without. I want to hold it precious, to understand it completely, I want people to understand that water is in everything and is everything. What does it make space for, what does it make possible?
In my practice, I take a speculative fiction-inspired approach in my attempts to answer these questions, working between figuration and abstraction to create pieces that seem to be somewhere close to, but remaining outside of, our own reality. I attempt to bridge the gap by bringing these creations into the context of recognizable human environments like aquariums or locker rooms, or by bringing human constructs into the natural world.
Currently, I am mostly working with ceramic sculpture, tile mosaic, and double-knitted colorwork tapestry. I also work with writing and performative reading.
