Artist statement

Room 354 – Artist-in-Residence Studio 1
I am a Canadian artist doing a residency at USF Verftet, August 25–September 30. Over the past fifteen years I have developed an exploratory, interdisciplinary approach, guided by the rural-domestic material practices I learned from my Norwegian-immigrant grandparents – including saving, salvaging, repairing, remaking, sorting, piling, and improvising make-shift solutions.
During my residency I’ve been dyeing fabric with the plants I collected at the site of a near-death accident I survived when I was living in Norway twenty years ago. As I develop this new body of work, I’m thinking about the ungovernable, incoherent, and liquid-like character of trauma, the way story forms a protective shell around traumatic ruptures, and the way my body’s memories of touch, leakage, transference, and transmutation are echoed in the near-alchemical process of using plants to dye fabric.
