Artist statement

I maleriene mine jobber jeg med å balansere et uttrykk som ligger mellom det faktiske og det fiktive, en slags form for magisk realisme hvor motivene er løsrevet fra en bestemt tid og et spesifikt sted. Jeg jobber serielt, i varierende størrelser, fra det små og intime til store format som fyller hele synsfeltet.
Bakgrunnen min som adoptert fra Sør-Korea er ofte en underliggende påvirkning for arbeidene mine, og fungerer som et ankerpunkt, ut i fra hvor jeg kan utforske skiftende og løsrevne narrativ.
Jeg jobber gradvis og lagvis med kull og akryl frem mot et resultat som blir til en hybrid mellom maleri og tegning. Ofte får akrylmalingen hviske ut deler av tegningen, noen steder jobber jeg opp igjen detaljer med kull, noen steder med maling og pensel.
Menneskene i arbeidene mine er fraværende eller fremstår som tomme partier med ubehandlet lerret hvor maling har fått blø delvis inn. Figurene blir definert av det omkringliggende landskapet, heller enn å bli modellert frem.
Maleriene mine kan gi assosiasjoner til håndkolorerte foto og grafikk men med klare maleriske og tegnede kvaliteter.
Jeg fullførte min master i kunst ved Kunst- og designhøgskolen i Bergen i 2011.
Siden da har jeg bodd og jobbet i Bergen.
De siste årene har jeg blant annet hatt soloutstillinger på Visningsrommet USF i Bergen (2021), Voss kulturhus (2018), Kunstgarasjen i Bergen (2017) og Galleri LNM i Oslo (2016).
Jeg har deltatt på gruppeutstillinger som Høstutstillingen (2021), Vevringutstillinga (2016) og Vestlandsutstillingen (2016), og stilt ut på Kristiansand Kunsthall (2022), QB Gallery i Oslo (2022), Bomuldsfabriken Kunsthall i Arendal (2021) og Galleri BOA i Oslo (2018).
Verk er innkjøpt av blant andre Haukeland universitetssjukehus, Universitetet i Bergen og Fana Kulturhus. Jeg har offentlige utsmykninger ved REV Ocean (2020), Tertnes VGS (2018-2019) og Klostergarasjen i Bergen (2015).
English:
In my paintings I work to balance an expression that lies between the actual and the fictional, a kind of magical realism where the motifs are detached from a specific time and a specific place. I work serially, in varying sizes, from the small and intimate to large formats that fill the entire field of vision. My background as an adoptee from South-Korea is often an underlying influence in my work, with the search for disconnected and shifting narratives as an anchor point for exploring story-telling through painting and drawing.
I work gradually and in layers with charcoal and acrylic towards a result that becomes a hybrid between painting and drawing. Often the acrylic paint erases parts of the drawing, in some places I bring back details again with charcoal, in some places with paint and brush.
The people in my works are absent or appear as an empty form, made up from untreated canvas where paint has partially soaked in. The figures are defined by the surrounding landscape, rather than being modeled.
My paintings can give associations to hand-colored photos and graphics but with clear painterly and drawn qualities.
I completed my master's degree in Fine Art at the Bergen School of Art and Design in 2011.
Since then I have lived and worked in Bergen.
In recent years, I have had solo-exhibitions at Visningsrommet USF in Bergen (2021), Voss kulturhus (2018), Kunstgarasjen in Bergen (2017) and Galleri LNM in Oslo (2016).
I have participated in group-exhibitions such as the Autumn Exhibition (2021), the Vevring Exhibition (2016) and the Vestlandsutstillingen (2016), and exhibited at Kristiansand Kunsthall (2022), QB Gallery in Oslo (2022), Bomuldsfabriken Kunsthall in Arendal (2021) and Galleri BOA in Oslo (2018).
Works have been purchased by, among others, Haukeland University Hospital, the University of Bergen and Fana Kulturhus. I have public commissions at REV Ocean (2020), Tertnes VGS (2018-2019) and Klostergarasjen in Bergen (2015).
