I work across art, architecture and design through my own Bergen-based practice called a-works | art + architecture.

My work is grounded within social, ecological and cultural communities, often working in close dialogue with them, unfolding through trans-disciplinary collaborations. The output ranges from architectural work of a social-ecological-cultural dimension, art installations in galleries and public space, participatory processes and workshops, architectural interventions in public space, and print publications together with curating and organizing public talks and lectures.

This work is typically of small to medium scale and intimately developed with (or for) small institutions, organizations, groups and individuals – with a non-commercial, civic oriented focus. My work has been shown internationally at the National Museum of Contemporary Art in Romania, Architekturzentrum in Vienna as part of the 2016 Vienna Biennale, the Romanian Pavilion at the 2021 Venice Architecture Biennale and 2022 BETA Bienale for Architecture in Timisoara. And within Norway at Hordaland Kunstsenter, USF Visningsrommet, Gyldenpris Kunsthall, Mikey Laundry Art Garden, BIT Teatergarasjen, Kunsthall 3,14, B-Open in Festplassen, Unge Kunstneres Samfund, Kristiansand Kunsthall, Barents Spektakel I have collaborated with, or carried out projects for ALDEA Center for Contemporary Art, Design and Technology, Kunsthuset Kabuso and Black Box Teater; school groups such as Ny-Krohnborg Skole and the Bergen School of Architecture; local organisations such as Solheimsviken Fryvillingsentral and Kvam Youth Centre; socially-engaged artists, visual artists and performance artists including
Katrine Meisfjord, Apichaya Wanthiang, James Turrell and Nicola Gunn.

The works range from small to medium scale architectural transformations of existing buildings for cultural institutions to art installations in public space and in galleries, participatory processes to transform public spaces such as parks, squares and outdoor areas, as well as researching, curating, editing and organizing lectures, workshops and publications.

Cristian Stefanescu (b.1984)

My initial education was in the visual arts before continuing in architecture in Toronto, Stockholm and Bergen. My practice today is an amalgam of these two formal studies, and of my experiences growing up between Romania and Canada, and living in Norway in recent years.

In tandem with running my own art and architecture practice since 2013 I am an Assistant Professor at the Bergen School of Architecture.
