Simone Jarvis (born Calgary AB, 1990) is an artist currently making work in Bergen, Norway where she moved in 2020 from Vancouver, Canada. She holds a Bachelor of Fine Art in painting from Emily Carr University and a Masters in Fine Art at the Faculty of Fine Art, Music and Design (KMD) under the University of Bergen (UiB).
The procedure of abstraction gives agency in the act of observation and therefore the potential for understanding which can be applied to the things we witness in the everyday and the social systems we are a part of or counter to. The personal is abstract, and therefore the personal is political. Painting is the same emotional and psychological space as the place where you negotiate the self. My artistic practice seeks to explore personal abstraction through painterly abstraction and how it has the capacity to reflect upon interpersonal complexities and narratives.
The sculptural paintings can be seen as figures, they perform as a body for paint to coexist with - an amalgamation of materials, light, colour, and paint. Material qualities help to propagate the painting's use of composition and form while pointing to abstraction and the extension of psychological space into pictorial space.
