Artist statement

I work with language as raw material—through text, the voice or otherwise performed. Within these mediums, I explore how digital culture has reprogrammed our relationship to language, particularly in relation to emotion. This involves looking at language's relation to forms of feeling and meaning, investigations into different modes and acts of reading, hierarchies of control and manipulation, and the formation of certain subjectivities within online communication.
I do this by moulding, stretching and transforming physical texts on screen, on the page and within speech sound. This can be in a plastic sense, seen in shifting and disintegrating video installations that treat text as image, or sonically, where the very fabric of linguistic meaning is tried and tested through vocal repetition and semantic destruction. In these forms, I highlight the malleable and unstable essence of language: a social medium that is in a constant state of redefinition by its users.
In an attempt to tap into an affectual mode that foregrounds feeling, I give rhythm and vibration primacy over semantics. I find that the resultant works seem to make more sound than sense. At the heart of this is a playful and performative use of voice; voice as carrier of rhythm, of vibration, of emotion; voice as the centre of the human self-experience of presence. In sound installations, performances and texts I try to capture this relation between sound and sense, between voice and writing.
