Kunstneren skriver om kunst – med utgangspunkt i en tekst fra Bill Violas Reasons for Knocking at an Empty House

Den amerikanske kunstneren Bill Viola (f. 1951) sier selv at alt han noensinne har gjort av kunstnerisk arbeid har sitt utspring i notatbøkene hans. Reasons for Knocking at an Empty House (utgitt 1995) er en omfattende samling essays, notater, anekdoter, prosjektbeskrivelser og skisser fra Violas da over 20-årige virke som kunstner. I disse betraktningene over kunstens muligheter, tid, rom og persepsjon skriver Viola med like stor selvfølge om egne hverdagserfaringer som om innflytelsen fra blant annet zen-buddhisme og sufisme.

Viola påpeker i forordet hvor unikt det er å få gi ut en samling tekster om eget arbeid i en kunstverden med mange «mellommenn».

Er en kunstners tekst vesensforskjellig fra annen tekst om kunst? Hvordan kan man skrive om det komplekse tankerommet som oppstår i den direkte erfaringen med kunstproduksjon?"

"The first stages of an insight:

Artist's writings – with Bill Viola's "Reasons for Knocking at an Empty House" as starting point.

The American artist Bill Viola (b. 1951) says that every part of his art production ever has its basis in his note books. "Reasons for Knocking at an Empty House"(1995) is a comprehensive collection of essays, notes, anecdotes, project descriptions and sketches from Violas then 20 years of artistic practice. In these considerations on art's possibilities; its time, space and perception, Viola writes just as easily on every day experiences as on the influence of zen-buddhism and sufism.

In the preface, Viola points at what a rare opportunity it is to publish texts on own artistic production in an art world with many mediators.

Are texts written by artists essentially different from other texts on art? How can one write on the complex set of thoughts that occurs in the direct experience of artistic production?"
